Stratlab nearly wins Young People March duck race

Saturday 10th September 2011 saw the Stratlab duck, launched and ready to go, in the March Charity Duck race with proceeds going to Young People March. Sitting proud in its own little canoe, the Stratlab duck looked ready to win.

The duck race started at the Town Bridge, and ended approximately 25yards downstream.

The Stratlab duck started very well. The onshore wind, and some human help, enable the duck to surge ahead. However a victory was not to be. As the wind caught the duck, and the assistance did not assist, the Stratlab duck was relentlessly overtaken by others.

Eventually we did make it to the finishing line.

The proceeds for the Charity duck race were for "Young People March" and more information can be found on their website.

GC columns for enantiomer separation

Enantiomer separation is used for chiral substances which – like our hands (greek: “ch[e]ir”) – are non-superimposable mirror images of each other.

Chromatography with chiral stationary phases allows separation of these enantiomers, which otherwise show identical physical and chemical properties. While chiral HPLC is mainly used for the separation of pharmaceutically active ingredients, chiral GC is the method of choice for the analysis of fragrances, flavors and other volatile substances.

Deuterium lamps glow with UV radiation

A light in the darkness, a beam of beautiful high intensity Ultra Violet radiation. Deuterium lamps are this.

Sadly not designed to make the laboratory look appealing, tasteful or cheerful, but fit mainly for life in the arena of HPLC or High performance Liquid Chromatography.

Sandwiched between a computer screen, a pile of papers and a retort stand, lies the spectrophotometer, in which these D2 lamps glow with perfection.

The deuterium arc lamp or simply deuterium lamp is a low pressure gas discharge light source often used in spectroscopy when a full spectrum (continuous) source of illumination in the ultraviolet region is needed - being especially ideal for liquid chromatography and spectroscopy.

Specifically used as a stable broad-band UV light source for liquid chromatography and spectroscopy. These analytical techniques are used to differentiate the constituent elements in a substance.

Atomic absorption spectroscopy turned on its head

The normally staid market of atomic absorption spectroscopy was turned on its head with news of the launch of a new range of hollow cathode lamps. The lamps are available exclusively through Stratlab and will be branded 'dot-red sol' lamps.

The lamps will initially be available in uncoded format and prices are very competitive starting at just £93.00.

The lamps are available in both standard 37mm and, for Perkin Elmer instruments, 51mm diameter.

Lamps come with a 5000mAH warranty in line with lamps supplied by instrument manufacturers.

Worldwide hollow cathode lamp production is controlled by no more than 6 companies including original equipment manufacturer's. This new entrant looks set to have management of the existing producers sleeping uneasily.

Stratlab Managing Director John Bateson was excited about the launch of the dot-red sol range and clear about the company’s objectives: "We want to drive a coach and horses through the scientific light source market".

"We expect our prices and product quality to prove a winner with our customers", he added.

The lamps are available worldwide through a network of dealers.

Laboratory Reagent Bottles - Good all rounders

Actually, there isn't anything really exciting you can say about Laboratory reagent bottles. They are one of those things that simply get a job done. Holding liquid, dispensing it under the watchful eye of the technician - indeed you could say that reagent bottles are one of the unsung heroes of the laboratory!

Stratlab Ltd is selling a high quality range that has many uses in the laboratory including storing chemicals and solvents.

They are manufactured from Borosilicate glass (ISO3585) and these bottles are heat resistant to 140ºC

They can be cleaned easily, and repeatedly auto-claved for sterile applications.
Each bottle is graduated and comes complete with a blue plastic cap and pouring ring (which ensures smooth transfer of contents without drips).

Caps and pouring rings are also heat resistant to 140ºC.

For user convenience, all bottles in the range, from 100ml to 20L, share the same neck and screw thread size, GL45.

These bottles are manufactured within the EU and comply with ISO4796.
